Yellow-throated Fulvetta

Schoeniparus cinereus

Luminous small bird with bright yellow underparts and a lemon-colored brow with thick black borders. Inhabits mid- to high-altitude broadleaf forests, often in openings or edges. Forages close to the forest floor, often with other species in large mixed flocks. Superficially similar to a brightly-colored leaf warbler, but lacks wingbars, has a more contrasting head pattern, and is structurally larger-headed and smaller-billed. Gives quick chirps and chips. Song is a descending series of sharp notes which ends in a brief accelerated burst.

White-flanked Sunbird

Aethopyga eximia

A Javanese highland endemic, found from foothill forest and forest edge up into the low, scrubby growth above the treeline. Long-tailed male is stunning and utterly unmistakable, with a rose-red throat and chest, iridescent blue-green “shield” on the forehead, a smoky dark gray belly, and an iridescent blue tail. Female is much less eye-catching, with a gray head, buffish belly, and brown tail. Both sexes have an olive-brown back and a white streak on the side. Forages actively, sometimes in the lower storeys of forest. Gives bland series of chips, as well as a ringing “dink dink dink!” and a quick, descending “sweep”.

Rufous-headed Tailorbird

Rufous-headed Tailorbird

Phyllergates heterolaemus

A small, long-billed, long-tailed bird of montane forest and scrub on Mindanao, with an olive back, wings, and tail, a yellow belly, a rufous head, and a pale buff throat and chest. Often cocks its tail. Juvenile has an olive rather than rufous head. Similar in shape and habits to other tailorbirds on Mindanao, but occurs at higher elevations, and has a yellow belly and rufous head. Song consists of very short, well spaced, varied phrases of fairly long, high-pitched piping notes.
