Rote Boobook
Ninox rotiensis
Found only in forested areas on Rote Island, this medium-sized brown owl is physically all but identical to several closely-related species spread out across Indonesia and Australasia; fortunately, no others are present on Rote. Note the bright yellow eyes, speckled underparts, and large round head characteristic of the Boobooks. Gives a very dry, grating “grukgruk”, often in extended series and in duets. Formerly regarded as a subspecies of Southern Boobook.

Crested Pigeon
Ocyphaps lophotes
A common gray pigeon that is easily identified by the long pointed crest on the top of its head. Mostly pale gray with bright iridescence on wings. Feeds only on the ground. Takes flight with noisy wing-claps, and in flight has a wing-whistle which makes it sound like a wind-up toy. Common in open habitats and is often present in suburban areas.

Black-tailed Crake
Zapornia bicolor
Small dark crake found in highlands and foothill regions, where it inhabits forested marshes, flooded fields, and wet shrubby patches. Rich brown above and dark gray below. Color scheme similar to Brown Crake, but darker overall, particularly on the face. Like most crakes, generally shy, preferring thick vegetation, but will venture into open fields and marshes during dawn and dusk. Voice consists of two hoarse croaks, followed by a clattering descending trill.

Black-throated Thistletail
Asthenes harterti
Small, round, long-tailed canastero of dense understory in upper humid montane forest along the east slope of the Andes in central and NW Bolivia. Fairly common throughout range, and very inquisitive. Black throat, plump figure, and long thin raggedy tail distinctive in range. Song a fast, accelerating series of high squeaks.
