White-tipped Plantcutter
Phytotoma rutila
Medium-sized, distinctive cotinga of dry, open woodlands and grasslands, typically in areas dominated by dense undergrowth. Also found in agricultural fields and shrubby areas. Conspicuous and generally easy to detect. Male has grayish head and upperparts, and a beautiful red-orangish coloration in the underparts. The female is mostly brownish, with dense darker streaking. Feeds mainly on foliage, along with flowers and small fruits.

Townsend's Shearwater
Puffinus auricularis
Endangered, small black-and-white shearwater, endemic to Mexico. Found around Socorro Island mainly from November to May, and rarely offshore between Jalisco and Oaxaca. It is usually found with feeding flocks of other shearwaters, boobies, and terns. Flight is fast and strong, wheeling fairly high in strong winds. Blackish above and white below with blackish undertail coverts, fairly long tail, and white patches or saddlebags that wrap up around the base of the tail. Similar species: Black-vented Shearwater is dark brownish above without the strong black cap of Townsend’s.
White-headed Steamer-Duck
Tachyeres leucocephalus
Large, flightless sea duck of the coast of Chubut and Santa Cruz provinces of SE Argentina. From Flying Steamer Duck by White-headed’s pale head, large size, and massive bill. Spends most of time near shore foraging for molluscs and crustaceans by diving. Often in small groups, sometimes mixed with smaller Flying Steamer-Duck.
Broad-tipped Hermit
Anopetia gounellei
Boldly patterned, medium-sized hummingbird with a long curved bill. Has a bold eye-mask, a bronzy-green back, and buffy underparts. Note the rusty throat and the broad white-tipped tail. Found in wooded humid areas of Caatinga vegetation.
