Necklaced Woodpecker
Dryobates pernyii
Fairly small, stout black-and-white woodpecker with buffy underparts. Male is brightly marked with a flaming orange patch on the neck, a crimson crown, and a dull orange vent. Also note the red chest patch bordered with a black stripe. Females are duller, but sometimes have a paler orange neck and breast patch. Similar in coloration to Darjeeling and Great Spotted Woodpeckers, but Crimson-breasted is noticeably smaller and stouter. Inhabits mid- to high-altitude broadleaf forests. Gives a loud “chik!”, as well as a descending rattle.

The necklaced woodpecker (Dryobates pernyii) is a small species of woodpecker in the genus Dryobates. It is found in Bangladesh, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests.

It was previously considered conspecific with the crimson-naped woodpecker (Dryobates cathpharius). While the two have various amounts of red on head and breast and other distinguishing features, including size. There are three subspecies; D. p. tenebrosus from north and east Myanmar to north Laos, north west Vietnam and south China, D. p. pernyii from central China, D. p. innixus from north-central and east-central China.

Vogelkop Bowerbird
Amblyornis inornata
A common bowerbird of montane forest on the Bird’s Head and Neck of New Guinea. Stocky with drab brown plumage. Unlike other related species, the male lacks a crest and resembles the female. Most easily observed at the bower; a spectacular tent-shaped construction which it adorns the front of with colorful objects. No other drab-colored bowerbirds co-occur, and the female Masked Bowerbird has a yellow rather than brown belly and is found at lower elevations. Voice, various loud buzzes, shrieks and squawks.
Short-tailed Pygmy-Tyrant
Myiornis ecaudatus
Tiny stump-tailed flycatcher; one of the smallest birds on earth. Minute size and compact body give it a unique appearance, in some ways looking more like a bumblebee than a bird. Whitish underparts with green back, gray head, and white spectacles. Found in mature and secondary rainforest, especially in areas with tall trees. Usually perches in the rainforest midstory and can be tricky to spot. Its song is a soft pair of short trilled notes “trrr-trrr,” sounding rather insectlike.
Green Honeycreeper
Chlorophanes spiza
Very attractive small tanager of humid tropical lowlands. Found in humid evergreen forest edges, plantations, and gardens; at times with mixed-species feeding flocks of honeycreepers and euphonias. Often in pairs, feeding at all levels in fruiting trees and bushes. Note the short, curved bill. Males are a unique green-blue color with black hood and a banana yellow beak. Female resembles female Red-legged Honeycreeper but is larger, brighter, uniform green, with yellow lower bill and grayish legs.
