Buru White-eye

Chunky, skulking warbler that favors dense undergrowth. Yellow below and olive above with blue-gray head and chest. Blacker lores set off distinctive white arcs above and below eye. Adult males show darkest head; females and immatures have paler gray head and whitish throat. Found in thickets, clearcuts, open mixed forests, and riparian zones. Breeds primarily in mountainous regions of western North America; winters from Mexico to Costa Rica. Compare with Mourning Warbler, but little range overlap, and note longer tail and white eye-arcs on MacGillivray’s.

A slender, plain sooty-gray apalis with red eyes and a buffy-brown forehead and throat. Juvenile is paler than the adult, with a dingy cream belly. Resident, inhabiting canopy and middle levels of both primary and patchy degraded forest between 700 and 2000 meters in mountains and hilly areas in the Bamenda Highlands and Adamawa Plateau of Cameroon, where no similar apalises occur. Vocalizations include a monotonous “dleep-dleep-dleep” and a whip-like 3-noted “tee-twi-dip, tee-twi-dip, tee-twi-dip.”

Distinctive small bird with extremely wide flat bill, best noted from below. Underparts bright yellow, upperparts olive in females, black in males, with stark white wingbars, white throat, and yellowish eyebrow. Long, rounded tail often cocked up. Juvenile lacks white throat patch and has stubby tail. Found in rainforest habitats, where it tends to forage in the canopy.
