Qilian Bluetail
Tarsiger albocoeruleus
A newly described species endemic (at least as a breeder) to a few pockets of northern China. Essentially visually identical to Red-flanked Bluetail: adult male is sky-blue above and pale below, with orange sides and a small white eyebrow. Female and juvenile are more subdued, but still have the rufous flanks and blue tail. Breeds in humid montane forest, often favoring mossy, damp areas. Wintering range and habits essentially unknown, but probably overlap those of Red-flanked Bluetail. Can be hyperactive, moving quickly across the forest floor, stopping to flick the tail downwards. Best identified by range and distinctive song: a short, descending sweet yet burry phrase repeated regularly, very different from the song of Red-flanked Bluetail. Also has a variety of calls that are less distinctive, including a rising “sweet”, a descending “seet”, and a series of low, dry notes.

Toco Toucan
Ramphastos toco
Large and impressive toucan with a huge orange bill with a black tip and base. The body is mostly black with a white throat, and rump, and a red vent. Dark eyes are surrounded by orange and blue skin. Found in savanna and open woodland, avoiding humid forests. Makes a raucous far carrying croaking “wreh” call, and flies with noisy wingbeats.

Diademed Sandpiper-Plover
Phegornis mitchellii
Unique little shorebird, found very locally in the high Andes on bogs, lakeshores, and gravel bars in rivers and streams. Usually in pairs or family groups; does not mix with other species. Runs and bobs with a nervous gait, and feeds by probing with its weevil-like bill. Flights usually short and low, rather bounding. Despite boldly patterned plumage, it can blend in well with stony substrates. Note black head with a white diadem, a rusty nape, and fine dark barring on underparts.

Turquoise Parrot
Neophema pulchella
Brightly colored small parrot with yellow underbelly, green back, and a blue face and shoulder patch. Adult male has entirely blue face; female and juvenile have reduced blue. Typically occurs in fringe habitats: favors grassy areas near forest edges where small groups feed on the ground.
