Red-keeled Flowerpecker
Dicaeum australe
A small bird of lowland and foothill forest and more open woodland. Black upperparts are glossed blue, while white underparts are washed with pale gray. A red stripe runs down the belly. Note the fairly long slender bill. Similar to Fire-breasted Flowerpecker, but lacks the black line down the belly. Voice includes sharp, repetitive “chik!” calls, sometimes descending into a more varied, rapid series and a trill.

Small, relatively long curved bill of medium thickness, sexes similar, races vary by having black breast and broad scarlet keel haematostictum or no black and narrow scarlet keel australe male upperparts glossy blue black; chin and sides of throat white; rest of underparts gray with diagnostic narrow scarlet stripe down center of the breast and belly; underwing and pectoral tufts white. female like male but paler. imm dark grayish brown above, brownish olive gray below. Bill and lags black; eye dark chestnut.

Powerful Owl
Ninox strenua
Very large dark brown-and-white owl with underparts heavily marked with dark chevrons and enormous yellow feet. Found around coastal south-eastern Australia. Roosts in large trees along creeks, gullies, in dense woodland and forest. Call is a loud double-hoot with second note slightly higher than the first.
Grande Comore Drongo
Dicrurus fuscipennis
Bold, glossy-black fork-tailed bird with a red eye. A rare endangered species that is confined to the island of Grand Comoro. Found locally at lower elevations in plantations, secondary forest, and scrub. Perches prominently on open perches, swooping out to catch insects on the wing. Song is a repeated sequence of whistles, creaks, and rasps. Somewhat similar to Grand Comoro Bulbul, but darker, with a forked tail, and without an orange bill.
Common Scale-backed Antbird
Willisornis poecilinotus
Short-tailed antbird found in the understory of mature rainforest. Forages singly or in pairs, clinging sideways to vertical stems close to the ground; often follows army ant swarms, but usually does not associate with mixed species flocks. Males are gray with black scalloping on the back and black tail with white tip. Females vary in plumage geographically but are generally tawny buff with similar diagnostic black markings on the back and black-and-white tail; underparts gray in northeastern Amazonia, and underparts gray and upperparts uniform brown in southwestern Amazonia.
