Bran-colored Flycatcher

Myiophobus fasciatus

Small, mostly brown flycatcher that inhabits lightly wooded areas and forest edge. Good field marks include its streaky breast, tan wingbars, and lack of strong facial markings. Typically seen alone or in pairs, often sitting quietly on a low perch. Vocalizations include a rising trill and a clear whistle. Note that birds found west of the Andes from southern Colombia to northern Chile are now considered to be different species.

Adelaide's Warbler

Adelaide's Warbler

Setophaga adelaidae

A small, brightly colored inhabitant of thickets in woodlands and scrub. Feeds actively, snatching insects from leaves and twigs. It is passingly similar to the Northern Parula, but the parula has yellow-green on its back and the yellow below does not extend onto the belly as it does on Adelaide’s. Its song is series of rapidly given sweet notes that accelerate as the song progresses before sometimes slowing again towards the end. Call is a sweet “chick” with a slight squeaky quality.

Pale-billed Hornero

Pale-billed Hornero

Furnarius torridus

Chunky, chestnut-colored bird found only near large rivers in the western part of the Amazon basin. Plumage is chestnut-brown with pale eyebrow, throat, and belly. Separated from Pale-legged Hornero by darker breast, face, and crown; from Lesser Hornero by larger size, darker breast, and pale (not dark) legs. Inhabits understory of densely wooded and seasonally flooded forest along rivers and on river islands. Song is a descending whinny.

Northern Crombec

Northern Crombec

Sylvietta brachyura

A small and virtually tailless warbler with a gray-brown back and rufous underparts. There is some geographical variation; the throat can be dull rufous, dull white, or bright white. Always shows a gray-brown eye-line. Found in a wide variety of savanna and woodland habitats. Similar to Red-faced Crombec, but has a strong eye-line, and in the area of overlap, usually shows a bright white throat. The song is a quick, jumbled whistled phrase that varies somewhat across the range. The call is a rapid wooden trill.
