Dark-breasted Rosefinch
Procarduelis nipalensis
Dark medium-sized rosefinch. Male is is dark pink with a lighter throat and eyebrow. Female is dark brown with light wingbars. Both sexes can be similar to Vinaceous Rosefinch, but note male’s different head pattern and female’s unstreaked underparts and noticeable wingbars. Forages on the ground in montane and hill forest, forest edge, and rocky meadows and slopes. Gives a wheezy sparrow-like “wheer.”

The dark-breasted rosefinch was formerly placed in the genus Carpodacus but was moved Procarduelis based on the results from the phylogenetic analyses of mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequences.<p>Subspecific variation is mostly clinal, with the plumage becoming darker from west to east. There are between two-three recognised subspecies:

Black Hawk-Eagle
Spizaetus tyrannus
Uncommon, spectacular, crested eagle of lowland tropical forest. Most frequently seen soaring in mid-late morning; rarely seen perched. Gives loud, far-carrying whistles while flying, which often indicate its presence. Adult is black overall with bold white checkering under the wings and bold white bands on the tail. Immatures, although rarely seen, are browner with a white throat and crown. The short bushy crest is usually apparent only on perched birds and is not seen in flight.

Macropygia timorlaoensis
A large, long-tailed dove. Male is boldly patterned, with dark upperparts and pale underside, each extensively covered in dark barring. Female and juveniles of this little-known species reported to have fainter streaking below with rufous chest coloration. Found within forest, woodland, and plantations in the lowlands. Confined to Tanimbar Islands, where it is the only cuckoo-dove. Much larger and darker above than Barred Dove. Gives a repetitive two-note burry whistle, the first note upslurred and amplified, the second descending and mournful: “woooOOp-wooo.”

Amytornis modestus
Small brownish bird with fine white streaking and long cocked tail, found in open shrubland of northern South Australia and northwestern New South Wales (different subspecies). Upperparts pale brown, with even paler brown underparts. Much more solidly built than fairywrens, with fine white streaks on head and chest. Forages on the ground, darting between shrubs.
