Black Partridge
Melanoperdix niger
Infrequently-encountered small gamebird. Male is uniquely glossy-black all over, while the female is predominantly chestnut-brown with a pale lower belly. Both sexes have an odd, heavy bill somewhat reminiscent of a finch or parrot. Inhabits lowland and foothill forest, often favoring wetter areas. Forages on the ground, singly or in pairs. Generally quiet.

Gray-and-buff Woodpecker
Hemicircus concretus
Small stout woodpecker with an oversized crested head and black-and-white scaling on the back. Males have a brilliant red front to the crest that females lack. Agile and active, frequently foraging in the upper canopy or on exposed snags. Crawls along trunks, sometimes descending headfirst like a nuthatch. Found in lowland and hill forests. Gives high-pitched squeaks, descending “peer” notes, and rattles.

Enormous black cockatoo with yellow cheek patches and tail panels. Most often observed flying above woodland or feeding in trees. Typically feeds on seeds and insect larvae, but also known to frequently consume pine cones from introduced tree species. Call is a loud, distinctive, mournful wailing sound.
Green-backed Trogon
Trogon viridis
Often first detected by its song: a melodic series of “kua kua kua kua” notes, similar to Surucua Trogon, but faster. Perches quietly in an upright position for long periods. Males have a green back, a bluish head and breast, a yellow belly. The underside of the tail is white with dark centers. Females have a gray-brown head and breast. Their tail is similar to the male’s but also has gray horizontal bars. Found in the upper to middle levels of humid forests, at forest edges, and in lighter woodlands and second growth.
