Rufous-breasted Warbling Finch
Poospiza rubecula
Rare and endangered bird found at high elevations in the western Andes of northern and central Peru. Note the black mask and the reddish-orange eyebrows, throat, and breast. Similar to Rufous-browed Hemispingus of the eastern Andes, but eyebrows are shorter and connect over the bill. Young birds mostly lack the mask and eyebrow and are heavily streaked below. Inhabits scrub and stunted woodland.

Streaked Tit-Spinetail
Leptasthenura striata
Fairly common on western slopes of the Andes and in interior valleys, favoring drier habitats with weedy brush on rocky slopes, and also agricultural areas with hedges and thickets. Often in pairs, foraging low in weedy brush, where can be hard to see well; agile and often active, clinging upside down at tips of branches. Identified by boldly streaked crown and back, weakly patterned or mostly plain underparts, and very long spiky-tipped tail. Compare with the bulkier Andean Tit-Spinetail (local overlap in Peru).

Yucatan Woodpecker
Melanerpes pygmaeus
Like a small version of Golden-fronted Woodpecker. Found in woodland, beach scrub, semi-open wooded habitats; usually less numerous than Golden-fronted. Yucatan populations of Golden-fronted Woodpecker very similar in plumage, but Yucatan Woodpecker has a much shorter bill, ‘egg-yolk’ yellow feathering around the bill base (vs. reddish on local Golden-fronteds), and relatively wider white barring on back (looks silvery at a distance, vs. blackish overall on Golden-fronted). Voice is quite different from Golden-fronted.

Brown Cacholote
Pseudoseisura lophotes
Large ovenbird with rusty-brown plumage, a long crest, and piercing yellow eyes. Found in deciduous forest, second growth, and open woodland. Often also encountered in wooded urban areas like gardens and parks, where it mostly forages on the ground. The song is usually given as an unmusical duet.
