Moustached Tinkerbird
Pogoniulus leucomystax
Small, olive-green tinkerbird. There are yellow patches on the wing and rump and a white slash on the face. Found in and around montane forest at middle and high elevations. Most often detected by voice: a chirpy series of “tek” notes, which varies from a fairly slow series of 3-4 notes to a long series of very fast notes. Very similar to Green Tinkerbird, but only overlaps slightly in range, and separated by the white facial mark.

Parasitic Weaver
Anomalospiza imberbis
Odd little short-tailed and chunky-billed member of the indigobird family. The male is yellow, with dark wings and tail, while the female is brown and streaky on the back and buff on the face and underparts. Found in moist grassland and open savanna. Uncommon across its range. Indistinct song consists of short, rasping phrases. Male could be confused with canaries but has an all-black bill. Female resembles female bishops but has a shorter and thicker all-black bill.

Brown Nightjar
Veles binotatus
A mottled reddish-brown forest nightjar with two distinctive white spots on either side of the throat. Perches on branches in the canopy and subcanopy, from which it can be seen hawking insects. Call is a repetitive “kwo” given from an above-ground perch or in flight. Does not usually respond to playback, and is sometimes imitated by drongos and parrots.

Chestnut-bellied Flowerpiercer
Diglossa gloriosissima
One of the most beautiful of all flowerpiercers, found only at high elevations near tree line in Colombia’s western Andes. Adult is black with a chestnut belly and silvery shoulder patch. Young birds are duller and browner. Also note the oddly shaped bill with a hooked tip, used to penetrate the bases of flowers to extract nectar. Inhabits scrub and stunted forest, and visits hummingbird feeders in at least one location. Song, often quite long, consists of squeaky chirps that constantly change in pitch.
