Icterine Warbler

Icterine Warbler

Hippolais icterina

Medium-sized warbler, light olive-brown above and yellowish below. Distinctive features include longish, daggerlike bill, long primary projection in the wings, and square tail. Told from similar Melodious Warbler by usually conspicuous pale wing panel, longer wings, and marginally shorter bill. Usually difficult to see when singing except during song flights, when long wings are apparent. Found in tall forest with oaks and birch, mixed forest, gardens, and parks. Song is fast, loud, and melodious with lots of mimicry.

Usambara Hyliota

Usambara Hyliota

Hyliota usambara

A medium-sized, generic-looking warbler-like bird of Tanzania’s Usambara Mountains with a blue-black back, a white wing patch, and a pale breast suffused with a yellow-orange tinge. Found very locally in humid foothill forest, where it forages in the canopy and sometimes joins mixed flocks with other birds. Easily recognized as the only hyliota within its tiny range. Can appear warbler-like, but separated from all warblers by the white wing patch. The vocalizations are not well known and seem to be easy to overlook, but do include quiet “pit” notes.

Blue-whiskered Tanager

Blue-whiskered Tanager

Tangara johannae

Rare tanager restricted to lowland and foothill rainforest in northwestern Ecuador and western Colombia. Brilliant emerald-green with black face and throat marked with short blue stripes. Similar in color to Emerald Tanager, but note the characteristic black bib and blue whiskers. Typically encountered at middle to upper levels of the forest, and often joins mixed-species flocks.
