White-billed Buffalo-Weaver
Bubalornis albirostris
A big, bulky, long-tailed black weaver. The bill is white in males and black in females. There is a white patch on the front edge of the shoulder, and also a pale patch in the wing that can be conspicuous in flight. Immatures are dark brown with heavy streaking below. Found in dry savanna and woodland, often in flocks. Builds huge communal stick nests. Similar to Red-billed Buffalo-Weaver, but never shows a red bill. The common call is a harsh “sjet” that is often given repeatedly by a whole group in chorus.

Pale-tailed Barbthroat
Threnetes leucurus
Scarce hummingbird that looks similar to a hermit. Look for buffy patch across the base of the neck, bold whitish flashes in the tail, and a fairly long, slightly decurved bill. Face pattern is rather diffuse, but look for the whitish mustache and pale line behind the eye. Found in the understory of forest and edges in lowlands and foothills below around 1,100 m where it stays low, quickly zipping around flower patches.
Chestnut-throated Monal-Partridge
Tetraophasis obscurus
Large modestly-colored terrestrial bird of open woodlands, scrublands, and meadows in alpine areas. Brown overall with a peaked head, chestnut throat, and bright red skin around the eye. Body intricately patterned, with fine black spotting on breast and white edging on wings and flanks. Similar Szechenyi’s Partridge does not overlap in range. Song is a messy cacophony of twanging, nasal, and slurred notes.
Bismarck Imperial-Pigeon
Ducula melanochroa
An entirely black pigeon with intricately white-edged wing feathers and red feet. Occurs mostly in undisturbed old-growth hill forest. In flight, resembles Metallic Pigeon and Yellow-legged Pigeon, but lacks the white throat of the former, and has pink legs and an entirely dark head, unlike the latter. Rarely heard, but has been known to utter deep booming sounds.
