Flavescent Warbler

A medium-sized black tern with a tail that appears square or slightly forked. Smaller and darker than Brown Noddy with a shorter tail, thinner bill, and more contrasting white cap. Uniformly black back, wings and tail, and dark legs, except on the main Hawaiian islands where tail and rump are grayish and feet and legs are bright orange. Nests on coastal cliffs, in sea caves, and in trees. More often seen in groups than Brown Noddy. Often seen from shore.

A typical black, white, and dark gray batis. Note the chest band, which is black in males and chestnut in females. The cap is dark gray, and there is a long, thin white eyebrow. Found in woodland, scrub, mangroves, and savanna ranging from moist to dry. Often in pairs. Similar to Pale Batis, but darker overall. The male is similar to male Chinspot Batis, but has a narrower black chest band and a darker cap. The distinctive song consists of high, thin upslurred whistles in short or long series, on the same pitch or sometimes alternating pitches.

This small warbler-like bird is unremarkable in appearance, but surely not the plainest of the white-eyes; look for a pale eye with a very narrow white eyering, grayish upperparts, and contrasting pale yellow throat. Endemic to the island of Yap, in the Western Caroline Islands of Micronesia, where it inhabits a wide range of forested and brushy habitats. The only other white-eye on the island, Yap White-eye, is dark olive-brown overall and has a much more prominent eyering. Forages actively in flocks. Gives high-pitched, scratchy trills and chirrups, comparable to parakeet and sparrow calls.
