Javan Banded-Pitta

A nondescript brown flycatcher with a rufous tail and rump. Note the hook-tipped bill, white throat, and pale gray unstreaked underparts. Juveniles paler above with buff fringes on some wing feathers. Occupies shady areas of the forest understory, including bamboo stands, in lowland areas. Restricted to the Sula Islands. Longer-billed and longer-tailed than female Snowy-browed Flycatcher, and further differs in absence of pale forehead and in having entirely gray underparts. Song is a quiet phrase of thin, high-pitched whistles, descending at the end, “tsee-tser-soo-loo-soo.”

Distinctive gamebird of farmland, grassy fields, and open heathland. Seen mainly as pairs and small groups, often along the edges of fields. Plumage is ornate and handsome, with a red bill, white throat, black streaked necklace, boldly barred flanks, and buffy belly. Other similar species (such as Chukar) do not overlap in native range, but can escape from collections or be introduced for hunting; all lack the diagnostic black-streaked necklace of Red-legged. Song is a dry, rasping “wa-cha-cha-wa-cha-cha” or “wi’ch-ch’ch.”

A relatively small, uniformly dark brown eagle with a contrasting bright-yellow bare patch between the eye and the bill. The underparts are speckled with small white spots. In flight, the wings have narrow black-and-white bands and the tail has thick black bands. Juvenile similar to adult, but with a pale, cream-colored head. Often seen perched in trees under the canopy, from where it watches for small prey. Calls delivered in a series of 4-5 short, chirp-like whistles.
