Long-tailed Triller

A classic small yellowish white-eye with a bold white eyering and whitish flanks. The “boring” white-eye on Lifou. Found throughout the island. No similar species on Lifou; the local race of Silvereye notably more boldly patterned, with gray back and underparts and black in the face. Has a variety of vocalizations, all “typical” sounding for a white-eye, including a short pleasant warbled song.

Medium-sized greenish bird with a bright yellow underside and black head. Occurs in a variety of habitats, wherever there are trees, including forest, open woodlands, and gardens, in the lowlands and foothills. Usually encountered in pairs or small groups. Yellow throat and lack of black in the wing separates this species from Black-hooded Oriole. Unmarked, black head identifies Black-capped Bulbul from Yellow-eared and Yellow-browed Bulbuls. Song is series of warbling whistles, rising at the end, “wet-wet-wet-wer-wer-wer-weer.” Also gives churring calls.

Typical black, white, and gray batis. Note the broad black chest band and the white slash across the wing. The eye is yellow in males and orange in females. Found in montane forest, usually in pairs in the mid-story. The vocalizations include high piping notes by the male that are often accompanied by a low bleating from the female. Similar to Ituri Batis but found at higher elevations, and separated by its broader black band across the breast.
