White-naped Brushfinch
Atlapetes albinucha
Fairly large, skulking sparrow of highlands in Mexico, Central America, Colombia, and Ecuador. Favors dense brushy areas and flower banks in evergreen and pine-oak forests; often in pairs. Usually rather skulking, on or near the ground in shady brush and understory; sings from bushes and trees. Note black head with contrasting white stripe down the middle. In Mexico, throat and underparts are mostly yellow. In Central and South America, yellow throat contrasts with pale grayish breast; these birds were formerly known as Yellow-throated Brushfinch.

Orange River White-eye
Zosterops pallidus
A small, active, yellow-green warbler-like bird with an obvious white eye-ring. The peach-colored underparts are diagnostic. Pairs and groups are restricted to riverine and other woodlands in semi-arid country. The song is a rambling musical warble similar to Cape White-eye’s, but drier, softer, and more muted. The Cape White-eye is similar to the Orange River White-eye, and they hybridize where they meet, but pure Cape White-eyes have gray or green underparts.
Chiriqui Quail-Dove
Zentrygon chiriquensis
Plump ground-dwelling dove, quite bright rufous overall compared with other quail-doves. Entire body is warm rufous, similar to Ruddy Quail-Dove, but note gray crown and black mustache line. Pinkish-red legs. Sexes alike. Prefers forests, usually on the ground unless flushed up into the lower levels of a tree. Like most quail-doves, often best seen by quietly walking along trails at dawn and dusk.
African Houbara
Chlamydotis undulata
Elegant bustard with a long neck and tail. Sandy-brown above and white below with a white crest and pale eyes. Note distinctive black stripe on the side of the neck, which can be erected in a spectacular display. Females are similar, but smaller. Eaglelike in flight with deep wing beats; white patches on the wingtips framed in black are distinctive. Found in desert and semi-desert with low scattered bushes.
