Double-banded Pygmy-Tyrant
Lophotriccus vitiosus
Tiny flycatcher, more often heard than seen. In addition to tiny size, note elongated crown feathers (usually held flat) and plain underparts. Found in a variety of forest types, especially those on sandy soils. May be alone or in pairs; perches well inside dense vegetation, usually at lower levels but occasionally into subcanopy. Sits still and darts upward to foliage for insect prey. Song is a hard, buzzing trill, repeated over and over and with little geographic variation. Similar to Helmeted Pygmy-Tyrant and often found in the same habitat; best told by voice, and, if seen well, by clear pale underparts that lack olive mottling.

Yellow-throated Spadebill
Platyrinchus flavigularis
Small, rare flycatcher of Andean cloud forest. It has a chestnut crown, yellow underparts, olive-brown upperparts, and a yellow spot in front of the eye. Bill is very wide at the base, but may look “normal” when seen from the side. Short tail and large head give it a top-heavy look. Perches motionlessly for long periods in lower to middle levels of the forest. Most common call is a short, sharp whistle repeated every few seconds. Song is a rising trill that may end in a squeak.
Moustached Babbler
Malacopteron magnirostre
Dull gray-brown babbler with a white belly. Namesake moustache is often faint and difficult to see. Sooty-capped Babbler is extremely similar but has a darker brown crown, a darker tail, and no moustache at all. Found in lowland and hill forests. Forages at middle and lower levels, clambering around on branches and trunks in small-to-medium-sized flocks, sometimes with other species. Sings a whistled series of descending notes; pairs often engage in duets. Calls include soft chips and raspy notes.
Kalao Blue Flycatcher
Cyornis kalaoensis
A recently split species from Kalao island in Indonesia. Deep blue upperparts with slightly paler brow, black chin and sides to the face, orange belly, and white throat. Chest and base to the undertail are white in the male and washed orange in the female. Found in forest patches, edge and scrub where fairly inconspicuous but confiding. Unmistakable in range. Vocalizations are not well known.
