Green Barbet
Cryptolybia olivacea
Chunky olive-green barbet. The head pattern varies geographically, from uniform olive-green, to olive-green with a yellow or buff ear patch, to black with a yellow ear patch. Found in the canopy of lowland and montane forest, often in the vicinity of fruiting trees. Sometimes perches out on dead trees, though otherwise inconspicuous. Call is a repeated, wooden “chak”. Similar overall coloration, but much larger than green tinkerbirds.

They have dull ginger-olive plumage, but are yellower on the wings, and paler below. The head and chin are dark brown in the nominate race, and the eyes vary from dull red to orange. The bill is black and the feet blackish. Juveniles are duller, with brown eyes.
分类信息
The number of races (or species) is not generally agreed upon, and the conservation status of the taxa depends critically on their taxonomic evaluation. Race C. o. hylophona is sometimes merged with woodwardi in a taxon with tentative species status, the so-called Woodward's barbet. These birds have the ear coverts and hind brow marked in yellow, as opposed to the dusky-headed populations. The type was obtained from oNgoye Forest in South Africa, and named for its discoverers, the Woodward brothers. C. o. belcheri, which lacks the yellow ear coverts, is endemic to two isolated inselbergs, and may constitute a third species.

Sooty Grouse
Dendragapus fuliginosus
Large, dark chickenlike bird found in wooded habitats, usually with conifers and shrubby undergrowth. Typically seen on the ground; easiest to detect in midsummer when females and chicks frequent roadsides and trails. When male displays, ruffles neck feathers to reveal wrinkled yellow skin and makes deep hooting noise, slightly higher pitched than Dusky. Female browner and more intricately patterned. Note large size and relatively long tail. Feeds on plant matter, especially conifer needles. Separate from Dusky Grouse by range.
Yellow-eyed Junco
Junco phaeonotus
This distinctive sparrow is common in open montane woodland usually dominated by pine. Primarily a Mexican species, barely enters U.S. Much like Gray-headed and Red-backed subspecies of Dark-eyed Junco but with staring yellow eye and rufous back usually extending onto wings. Otherwise pale gray, darkest around the eye. Bill half black, half yellow. White outer tail feathers like Dark-eyed Junco. Forages on the ground, but perches higher when singing. Song has a similar ringing tone to Dark-eyed Junco, but usually with several distinct sections of chips and trills.
Cordillera Azul Antbird
Myrmoderus eowilsoni
This beautiful antbird is one of the most spectacular ornithological finds in recent years. It was discovered in 2016, and named for the remote mountain range in northern Peru where it is found. The male has black underparts and wings, chestnut upperparts, white eyebrows, and buffy wingbars. The female has chestnut underparts and a white throat, giving her a masked appearance. Inhabits cloud forest understory, where it is usually seen walking slowly on the ground. Song is a piping “see you see me.”
