Moltoni's Warbler

Curruca subalpina

Closely related to Subalpine Warbler. Paler rufous below compared to the western species of Subalpine Warbler and lacks contrast between the rusty throat and whitish belly like the eastern subspecies of Subalpine Warbler. Breeds in Mediterranean scrub. In winter found in semi-arid acacia savanna. Call a diagnostic dry “trrrrr,” reminiscent of Spectacled Warbler.

Ornate Pitta

Ornate Pitta

Pitta concinna

A typical pitta: plump, short-tailed, long-legged, and primarily terrestrial (sometimes perches up to call). Bright green above with electric blue shoulder patch and rump and black head with conspicuous pale brow. Underside golden-buff with black and bright red on the belly. Juvenile duller, with little blue in wing, an orange-tipped bill, and a pinkish belly. Resident in woodland, forest, scrub, and plantations in the lowlands and hills of the Lesser Sundas, from Lombok east to Alor. Formerly regarded as a subspecies of Elegant Pitta, to which it is very similar; Ornate averages more extensively black on the throat and lower belly, and has a fairly evenly divided rufous-and-white “eyebrow.” Also note Ornate’s whistled two-note call.

Wire-tailed Manakin

Wire-tailed Manakin

Pipra filicauda

Spectacular manakin with very long tail filaments and piercing white eyes. Males are bright yellow from the face to the underparts and bright red from the crown to the mantle; otherwise they are black. Females are dull olive-green with a yellow tinge to the chin and breast and have shorter tail filaments. Usually found near streams in humid forests, including gallery forests and old second growth.

Rufous-rumped Foliage-gleaner

Rufous-rumped Foliage-gleaner

Neophilydor erythrocercum

A medium-sized bird, brownish above and pale buff below, with a bright rufous rump and tail and a distinctive buffy line behind the eye. Found in tall rainforest, where it occurs mainly in the midstory and canopy, but occasionally in the understory. Will follow mixed species flocks at all levels. Feeds on insects and forages actively, often investigating dead leaf clusters and other accumulations of detritus. Song is a short, weak series of squeaking notes that fades away; call is a hard doubled note. Most similar to Rufous-tailed Foliage-gleaner but somewhat larger and more likely to occur at lower levels in the forest; both tail and rump are rufous in Rufous-rumped.
