Black-bellied Tanager
Ramphocelus melanogaster
Found only in northern Peru, where it mostly replaces the very similar Silver-beaked Tanager in several river valleys in the foothills of the eastern Andes. Male is distinguished by his bright red sides and rump. Females of the two species are almost identical, though Black-bellied tends to be brighter red and have a darker throat. Inhabits lightly wooded areas and forest edge.

Bay-breasted Warbler
Setophaga castanea
Breeding males are distinctive with dark reddish-brown cap and sides, along with buffy nape. Two bold white wingbars. Females and fall birds are duller; most show at least some chestnut coloring on sides. Dullest birds are similar to Blackpoll and Pine Warblers; look for streaks on back, well-defined wingbars, and cleaner greenish-yellow head and neck. Prefers conifers during migration, but can be found in any woodland. Breeds in the boreal forest. In most of U.S. , only seen during migration. Winters in Central and South America. Listen carefully for extremely high-pitched, squeaky-wheel song, similar to a fast Black-and-white Warbler.

Long-billed Starthroat
Heliomaster longirostris
Rather large hummingbird of humid evergreen forest and edge in tropical lowlands; uncommon. Feeds mainly in the canopy, but also over clearings and streams where it hawks for insects with jerky flycatching sallies. Note the very long, straight bill, dark throat bordered by a broad whitish mustache, turquoise crown, and white patch above the rump. Sexes look similar, but immature lacks adult’s red color in throat (which is very difficult to see; throat usually appears blackish). Usually has a white spot behind the eye, not a whitish stripe like Plain-capped Starthroat. Also note greenish, not dusky sides as on Plain-capped Starthroat.

Mandarin Duck
Aix galericulata
Small exotic-looking duck found at lakes and parks, usually with nearby trees. Male very ornate with big orangey "sail fins" on the back, streaked orangey cheeks, and a small red bill with a whitish tip. Female has narrow white spectacles on shaggy gray head, bold pale dappled spots along flanks, and pale bill tip. Mainly found in pairs or singly, but will gather in larger flocks over the winter; perches readily in trees over water. Native to East Asia, but has established feral populations throughout Western Europe.
