Slaty Bristlefront

Merulaxis ater

Odd-looking terrestrial species with a long tail and a small tufty crest. Found in the understory of humid and montane forests and is rarely easy to see. Males have a dusky gray upper-body and a dark-brown lower-body, while females are all dark brown above and cinnamon below. The song is loud and startling; it begins with a variable series of “tip-tip” notes and finishes with a fast descending “dje-dje-djeeeee.”

识别特征

The slaty bristlefront is 18.5 cm (7.3 in) long. A male weighed 37.2 g (1.31 oz) and a female 33 g (1.2 oz). The male is mostly dark blue gray. The lower back is dark brown and the flanks, vent, and tail are black. The female is over all shades of brown, lighter on the throat and breast. Both sexes have a crest of short stiff feathers that stand erect at the base of the bill and forehead.

分布与栖息地

The slaty bristlefront is found only in southeastern Brazil, in a narrow band near the Atlantic coast from Espírito Santo south to Santa Catarina. It might have formerly occurred further north in southern Bahia.
The slaty bristlefront is a bird of humid forests in both lowlands and mountains. In a few locations it is found at elevations as low as 100 m (330 ft) but more typically its lower limit is 400 m (1,300 ft). In the northern part of its range it is found only in the mountains, as high as 1,800 m (5,900 ft).

行为

Little is known about the slaty bristlefront's diet. It is known to forage in pairs, though not close together, on the ground and in low vegetation.
One slaty bristlefront nest has been described, in Rio de Janeiro state. It was constructed by both members of a pair using twigs, narrow leaves, and leaf stems with a lining of lichen. It was placed in a roughly horizontal burrow at least 1.24 m (4.1 ft) long in an earthen bank.
The slaty bristlefront begins its song with a series of clicks followed by a trill described as "hysterical laughter". It has several calls, described as “tsewk-tsewk, pit”, “keekick”, and “he-he-heeheeheehee”.

Stripe-backed Bittern

Stripe-backed Bittern

Botaurus involucris

Very small, striped buffy heron of wetlands and lake edges with dense reeds and rushes. Boldly striped back pattern is distinctive. In flight shows contrasting broad rusty trailing edge to wings. Usually seen as single birds hidden in reeds or making short flights low over reeds or across patches of open water. Clambers easily and stealthily; hunts from perches over water, where sits patiently before stabbing at fish. Mostly silent.

Red-faced Guan

Red-faced Guan

Penelope dabbenei

Mostly arboreal guan endemic to the semi-humid forest with Podocarpus and alders of the mid-elevation east Andes in southern Bolivia and northeast Argentina. Often in ravines and river basins. The sympatric Dusky-legged Guan is more common, but shows grayish-blue skin around the eye. Tends to perch high in trees, singly or in pairs, and often found by far-carrying vocalizations given from high in trees. Note pale supercilium, dull pinkish legs, exposed red orbital skin and wattle.

Spectacled Weaver

Spectacled Weaver

Ploceus ocularis

An unstreaked bright yellow weaver with uniform green wings, back, and upper tail. A slender black bill and Zorro-like bandit mask surrounding the pale eye further identify it. The male has a black throat patch that the female lacks. Individuals and pairs occupy savanna, forest edge, and thicket, avoiding well developed forest. The species is often first detected by its distinctive downward “tee-tee-tee-tee-tee….” call. The Black-necked Weaver differs in having a distinctive dark back, except for the olive-backed race in West Africa, which is told apart from the very similar Spectacled Weaver by a thicker bill and more chestnut on the head and breast.
