Barred Becard

Pachyramphus versicolor

Becards are reminiscent of flycatchers but in a different family; they are medium sized and have a rather flat head. Barred is small for a becard; males have a distinctive yellow face, black cap and back, and thin barring on the underparts. Females have a gray cap, rufous wings, and more even yellow underparts. Singles or pairs are found in forested areas, including edges and second growth. Not usually super high in the trees.

Van Dam's Vanga

Xenopirostris damii

Large, big-billed vanga with white underparts. Males have a black hood, and females only a black cap. Rare Madagascar endemic that is found very locally in dry deciduous forest in the north and northwest. Can be found solo or in pairs, sometimes in flocks with other vangas. Separated from Madagascar Cuckooshrike by much larger bill and white rather than gray underparts.

Muisca Antpitta

Muisca Antpitta

Grallaria rufula

Plump bird with long legs and a short tail that ranges in the eastern Andes of Colombia, barely reaching over the border into Venezuela. Plumage is chestnut brown with an orange tinge to the breast and slightly paler belly; sometimes shows a faint mustache streak. Skulks in the understory of high elevation elfin forest and usually stays on the ground, but sometimes comes up to a low perch to sing. Common vocalization is a sweet, rising whistle followed by a lower pitched gargle, and also gives a series of flat whistles. It used to be called Rufous Antpitta.

Pearly-bellied Seedeater

Pearly-bellied Seedeater

Sporophila pileata

Very small finchlike bird with a short bill. Inhabits savannas and grasslands, where it often joins flocks of other seedeater species. Males are mostly gray-brown with a hint of cinnamon and have a black cap, wings and tail. Females are brown above and pale below, and are very similar to female Copper Seedeaters, but are grayer than that species.
