Grande Comore Flycatcher

Humblotia flavirostris

A distinctive and attractive flycatcher that is endemic to Grand Comoro. Dark brown on the upperparts and heavily streaked below, with a yellow bill and feet and white wingbars. Found at the middle levels of montane forest at middle and high elevations. Often flicks the wings and tail. No similar flycatchers occur in its small range. The vocalizations are a high, descending whistle and a short, spitting trill. The two calls are often alternated.

识别特征

The upperparts are grey-brown while the underparts are pale with dark streaks. It has a dark crown with pale streaks and the bill and feet are yellow-orange. The bird is 14 centimetres (5.5 in) long. It is often silent but has a soft trilling call. It differs from Muscicapa and other flycatchers in having plumage with a very soft and fluffy texture, and by having distinctive feathers on the crown that are a modification that represents the beginnings of the formation of a crest.

行为

Humblot's flycatcher feeds on insects which it catches by making short flights from a perch low in a tree or bush. Often, it will feed in groups of two or three. Little is known about its breeding habits; the only known nest was a cup built high in a tree which contained at least two young.

Lalage melaschistos

An overall sooty-colored cuckooshrike with broad white tips to the tail feathers. Male is dark sooty-gray with a slaty sheen, slightly paler on rump. Underparts paler toward tail; wings black. Strepera versicolor

Large, crow-sized bird, gray or black, with large black bill and yellow eye. In flight, white undertail, tail tip, and primary bases distinctive; some subspecies of Pied Currawong very similar, but Gray has narrow pale trailing edge to wing in all plumages. Black Currawong has thicker bill and dark undertail. Loud ringing, clinking song, reminiscent of some lyrebird sounds.

Santa Marta Tapaculo

Santa Marta Tapaculo

Scytalopus sanctaemartae

Small, mouse-like bird found in cloud forest understory in Colombia’s Santa Marta Mountains. Adult male is gray with a white crown patch and rusty barring on the lower underparts. Female is washed with brown, and young birds have a lot of scaling and barring. The only other tapaculo in the Santa Martas is Brown-rumped Tapaculo, which lacks white in the crown, occurs at higher elevations, and has a different voice. Typical song is a very fast trill that lasts for at least ten seconds and may continue for a minute or more.
