Crowned Slaty Flycatcher

A bold little flycatcher of mid- to high-altitude forests with a flashing black-and-white tail. Male is brown above with a black face, white eyebrow, and orange throat patch (gorget). The female is essentially a faded version of the male with a dark gray face and a pale, largely unnoticeable gorget. Usually perches at middle levels, sallying from its perch to catch flying insects. Often joins mixed-species feeding flocks.

Distinctive little bird of native temperate forests. Usually found in pairs or small groups, creeping along trunks and branches (like Northern Hemisphere nuthatches), mainly in canopy but sometimes lower down. Often travels in association with Thorn-tailed Rayaditos. Identified by shape and behavior, plus its contrasting white bib, dark head (lacks golden brow of rayadito), and bold white spots on belly.

A long-tailed kingfisher of lowland forest on Kofiau Island. Dark blue upperparts with pale blue crown and shoulder, red bill, white underparts, rump and completely white tail, shorter and thicker than similar species. The only paradise-kingfisher on Kofiau Island. Shakes its tail while it vocalizes. Song, a slowly rising trill, ending abruptly. Call, three downward whistles.
