Rufous-tailed Fantail
Rhipidura phoenicura
A unique Javan endemic, this species’ namesake rufous tail sets it apart from the other two fantails on the island. Also note white throat and “angry” eyebrows. An active inhabitant of foothill and montane forests, often moving with mixed flocks in tangled vegetation in the lower nad middle levels of forest. Song is a comical squeaky series of up-and-down notes. Call is a dry “chrit.”

Red-capped Plover
Anarhynchus ruficapillus
Small energetic plover with a fine bill, white underparts, and pale gray back. Lacks breast band. Adult has an obvious rusty-red cap, whereas juvenile has varying reddish tinges on the back of the head. Occurs beside a wide variety of saline wetlands where it moves quickly as it forages along the ground. Common around inland lakes as well as at the coast.

Black-faced Bunting
Emberiza spodocephala
A small songbird that often skulks deep in shrubbery but emerges to forage in the open more than some buntings. Adult male has grayish head and chest, yellow belly, and chestnut back and wings. Female is drab brown and extensively streaked overall. Female is somewhat similar to Gray or Masked buntings but has a paler base to the streaked underparts. Song consists of a variable series of alternating buzzy and warbled notes. A sharp “dink” call often betrays its presence.

Ashy Drongo
Dicrurus leucophaeus
A slim, medium-sized drongo with bright red eyes and gray plumage that is almost black in the western parts of its range and quite pale in the eastern parts of its range; eastern birds also often have an oval-shaped pale facial patch. It has a long slim tail with a deep fork. Common in wooded habitats where it sallies for insects and aggressively chases other birds that may compete for food or nectar. Most birds migrate south every winter. Similar to Black Drongo, but slimmer and usually in different habitats. Calls include harsh and sweet notes, and can mimic some bird species poorly.
