Green-breasted Bushshrike

Medium-sized, streak-backed cisticola of uplands. Varies geographically: gray-backed and streak-breasted in the south, and rufous-backed and plain-breasted in the north. Found in fynbos and karoo habitats, usually in areas with a mix of rocks, shrubs, and grass. Generally inconspicuous; seen singly or in pairs. Song is a short, explosive, accelerating trill. Calls include a rising, two-part “chu-cheee”. Very similar to Wailing Cisticola, but has a different voice, a smaller bill, less buffy underparts, and doesn’t show rufous in the wing.

A tiny parrot of lowland and foothill forest canopy in the south and west of New Guinea. Mostly green with yellow under the tail and a yellowish crown. NW birds have a red streak on the belly. Crawls actively on trunks, even upside down, like a nuthatch. May overlap with Red-breasted and Buff-faced but Yellow-capped lacks the blue crown and buff face. Call, a shrill, descending screech “kiiiiiii!”.

Attractive but rather local little bird of scrubby habitats and dense hedgerows in lowland desert. Mostly stays well hidden, hopping low to high in bushes and trees, tail sometimes held cocked. Sings from atop a bush or other prominent low perch. Readily identified by long spiky crest with a flashy white median patch. Male has solidly black face and throat while female has a whitish face and throat with black streaks. Immature has a plainer face with a whitish throat and shorter crest, but still has a big white flash in crest.
