Streaked Spiderhunter

Arachnothera magna

A large and noisy inhabitant of tropical and subtropical hill forests. Distinctive in its range; a large spiderhunter with a long, curved black bill and black streaking all over its yellow-green upperparts and lighter yellow underparts. Gleans invertebrates from foliage, but also hovers around and probes into flowers for nectar. Often moves with mixed flocks. Calls frequently, giving a loud, decisive-sounding “chitick, chitick!”.

识别特征

It is similar in size to a sparrow. It is olive yellow in color, with multiple darker streaks. It has a long, curved black beak and yellow legs. Below, it is pale yellow streaked with black. Its beak is specially adapted for a nectar diet.

Sao Tome Green-Pigeon

Sao Tome Green-Pigeon

Treron sanctithomae

Chunky, medium-sized pigeon that has a green back and gray underparts. Also note the purple shoulders and the whitish bill with a red base. Flight is fast and direct. Sometimes alone, though more often in small groups. The species clambers around clumsily like a parrot but can remain well hidden. Found in the canopy of rainforest, secondary forest, and plantations. Most common at middle elevations. Voice is a quiet but maniacal combination of sputters, whistles, and cackles. Easily identified, as it is the only green pigeon on the island of Sao Tome.

Buff-faced Pygmy-Parrot

Buff-faced Pygmy-Parrot

Micropsitta pusio

A tiny parrot of lowland and foothill forest. Mostly green with yellow undertail, blue tail and large buffy face with contrasting dark crown patch. As with other pygmy-parrots, climbs on trunks with its outsized feet, like a nuthatch feeding on lichens and bark fungus. May overlap with Red-breasted or Yellow-capped Pygmy-Parrots, but Buff-faced, lacks the red belly, yellow crown and has a more extensive buffy face. Call, a very high-pitch note of varying lengths, “siiiiii!” or double “sii sii!”

Bonelli's Eagle

Bonelli's Eagle

Aquila fasciata

Medium-sized, athletically proportioned eagle, with streaked whitish underparts contrasting with dark wings and tail. Juveniles are rufous below, and lack the adult’s broad dark band at the tip of the tail. Found in forests or mountains, sometimes in more open habitats in winter; usually in remote areas. Builds nests on cliffs and ledges, and in caves. Distinctive in flight: note bulging secondaries and narrowness of wing where it meets the body. Usually seen soaring over distant ridgelines, when the shallow “fingers” to its wings are obvious in contrast to the deep fingers of other eagles.
