White-rumped Kingfisher

Smallish chunky hawk. Identifiable by size, shape, and prominent black mask contrasting with orange cere. Generally rare. Inhabits wet forests where it hunts from the mid-level to the ground; often perches well below canopy level. Takes relatively small prey, chiefly frogs and snakes. Superficially similar to White Hawk but much smaller with orange (not blue-gray) cere; unlike White Hawk, Black-faced tends not to soar for long periods and is less frequently seen than White Hawk.

A very large barn-owl with a gray facial disk, gray crown, and rufous upperparts and wings with scattered dark markings. Prefers open country, like agricultural land, plantations, and forest edge, from lowlands to mountains. Limited to Sulawesi. Distinguished from smaller Minahassa Masked-Owl by gray face, gray forecrown, more extensive dark markings across wings and upperparts, and preference for open country. Distinguished from Australasian Grass-Owl by feathered legs that do not project beyond the tail in flight, and by less contrasting wing pattern. Call is a long screeching note.

Brown lapwing with a gray head and neck, bright yellow bill, and a white belly and gray breast separated by a dark breast band. When in flight, note striking black primary feathers and white secondaries, as well as a white rump and dark tail. Gregarious, usually seen in loose small flocks, sometimes with other lapwings. Inhabits cultivated wetlands and marshy areas, feeding mainly on insects, worms, and crustaceans. Gives grating, piping screams.
