Black-faced Dacnis
Dacnis lineata
This small tanager is widespread and fairly common in lowlands across northern South America. Male is mostly cerulean blue with a black mask and upperparts. Also note piercing yellow eye. Most widespread population has white belly, but "Yellow-tufted" form in western Ecuador and Colombia has bright yellow belly and conspicuous yellow tufts under shoulders. Female is much duller than male: yellowish below with gray head, olive back, and a hint of a dark mask. Females also have a yellow eye. Typically found in pairs in the canopy of lowland forest and edges, often following mixed-species flocks.

Spotted Nothura
Nothura maculosa
Small sandy-colored tinamou; largely yellow below with a cryptically patterned back and head with a mix of dark and pale feathers. Mostly found in natural grasslands and savannas as well as in cultivated areas and can be locally common, but difficult to spot. The song is a repetitive “Tchip, tchip, tchip, tchip” or an insect-like “triiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii” trill.
Australasian Bittern
Botaurus poiciloptilus
Large, stocky, strongly patterned heron with broad neck and yellow-green legs. Upperparts dark brown, underparts streaked. Usually found in reed beds, where it can be difficult to observe; often forages at night. When disturbed, “freezes,” with head pointing upward (as if trying to blend in with the habitat). Compare young Rufous Night-Heron, which is much smaller, has shorter neck, and tends to roost in trees. Song a very deep, slowly repeated "boom."
Pale-footed Bush Warbler
Hemitesia pallidipes
A retiring warbler of densely vegetated forest edges, lightly wooded slopes, and clearings in foothill to montane regions; favors areas with thick ground vegetation. Dull and unremarkable to look at; plain brown above and paler brown below, with a white throat and eyebrow. More contrastingly marked than Brownish-flanked Bush Warbler; smaller and stouter than Manchurian and Japanese Bush Warblers. Song is what sets it apart: a sharp note followed by a quick bout of chattering and squeaking.
