White-eyed Starling

A tiny bird of mossy montane forest and edge on Luzon. Male has glossy black upperparts, pale underparts (whiter on the throat), and the namesake yellow crown stripe. Female has olive upperparts. Similar to Bicolored Flowerpecker, but male Yellow-crowned has a bright crown patch and female has a more yellowish belly. Voice includes a high-pitched descending whistle and a sharp “tsik!” Treated by some taxonomies as subspecies of Flame-crowned Flowerpecker, which is endemic to Mindanao.

Small scops-owl with bright yellow eyes, found only on Simeulue. Almost uniformly rufous-brown, with very inconspicuous (often flattened) ear tufts. The only resident scops-owl on Simeulue; migrant Oriental Scops-Owls could also occur on the island, but average larger, and have a more well-defined facial disc. Utilizes a variety of wooded habitats, from pristine forests to plantations. Listen for its song, a series of hiccupy piping notes, somewhat reminiscent of a barbet. Also gives a series of short squeals, which are sometimes mixed in with the song.

Inconspicuous, apalis-like grayish warbler with a long tail, straight thin bill, and buff-brown forehead. Isolated population in Mozambique, sometimes considered a different species (Njesi Tailorbird), is smaller, darker, and browner on the head. Singles and pairs are very low density, shy and creep slowly through the undergrowth and canopy, especially nearby streams; sometimes joins mixed-species flocks. Song a pleasant sweet bouncing “eeh-yuh, eeh-yuh, eeh-yuh” or strident “peelik-peelik-peelik”, sometimes joined in duet with a dry buzzing “dzit”; call a high-pitched “chhet” like a squeaky dog’s toy. Similar Brown-headed Apalis is shorter-billed than Long-billed Tailorbird and has white tips to the tail.
