White-rumped Hawk

Parabuteo leucorrhous

Small raptor of montane forest in the Andes from Venezuela to Argentina, with a disjunct population in southeastern South America. Adults are black with a piercing yellow eye. In flight, look for the paddle shaped wings and contrasting white underwing coverts. The tail has contrasting black and white bands. Juveniles are buffy below with messy dark markings; note the white eyebrow and overall compact shape. Singles or pairs are uncommon over forest or adjacent clearings. Typically seen soaring or occasionally perched in the canopy.

识别特征

The white-rumped hawk is 33 to 40 cm (13 to 16 in) long with a 67 to 79 cm (26 to 31 in) wingspan. One male weighed 290 g (10 oz) and one female 389 g (14 oz). Males and females have the same plumage. Adults are almost entirely black but with the namesake white rump and undertail coverts. Their tail has a narrow grayish-brown band at its midpoint and their thighs are feathered rufous. Their eye, cere, legs, and feet are yellow. Immatures have brown upperparts with rufous mottling and heavily mottled rufous underparts.

分类信息

The white-rumped hawk was previously placed in the large genus Buteo but a 2009 paper provided the evidence to move it to genus Parabuteo, joining Harris's hawk (P. unicinctus) there. An earlier proposal to place it in the resurrected genus Percnohierax was not accepted. The white-rumped hawk is monotypic.

分布与栖息地

The white-rumped hawk has two separate ranges. One is from the Andes and other mountains of Venezuela and Colombia south in the Andes through Ecuador into Peru, Boliva, and northwestern Argentina. The other range is from southern Brazil through Paraguay into northeastern Argentina. The species inhabits the interior and edges of dense subtropical and tropical forest and also the Chaco in the east. In elevation it mostly occurs between 1,500 and 2,900 m (4,900 and 9,500 ft) in Colombia, between 1,650 and 2,500 m (5,400 and 8,200 ft) in Peru, and up to 3,500 m (11,500 ft) in Bolivia. It occurs at lower elevations in its eastern range.

Yellow-billed Blue-Magpie

Yellow-billed Blue-Magpie

Urocissa flavirostris

The southwestern counterpart of the Red-billed Blue-Magpie, this colorful long-tailed corvid also forages in noisy flocks. Similar in coloration to Red-billed, but Yellow-billed is paler blue overall, with a small white patch at the back of the crown instead of an extensive white stripe, and a bright yellow bill instead of a scarlet one. Primarily found in Himalayan hill forest, with disjunct populations in northwestern Myanmar and northern Vietnam.

Slender Sheartail

Slender Sheartail

Doricha enicura

Small hummingbird of scrubby forests and overgrown clearings in the mountains of Chiapas and south to southern Honduras. Feeds quietly at all levels and is easily overlooked. Note the long arched bill; distinct from other small hummingbirds in its range. Spectacular male has very long blackish tail (forked, but usually held closed in a point) and green-and-purple throat (usually looks dark). Female is buffy below.

Scottish Crossbill

Scottish Crossbill

Loxia scotica

Crossed bill tips give crossbills their name. Only found in pine forests of Scotland, where uncommon and local. As a rule, not safely identified in the field because it looks intermediate between smaller-billed Common (Red) Crossbill and bigger-billed Parrot Crossbill (both of which can occur in same areas). With experience (and computer analysis!), may be identified by voice. Like other crossbills, found in pairs or flocks feeding quietly on pine cones or calling excitedly before taking off in wide-ranging, bounding flight. Male plumage reddish overall; female grayish green overall, with brighter rump.
