Cordoba Cinclodes

Cinclodes comechingonus

Small-billed cinclodes of the Sierra de Comenchingones in central Argentina. Disperses to adjacent lowlands during the nonbreeding season. The only Cinclodes in range with extensive rufous on wings; yellow base to mandible also distinctive.

识别特征

The Cordoba cinclodes is about 17 cm (6.7 in) long and weighs 25 to 32 g (0.88 to 1.1 oz). The sexes have the same plumage. Adults have a buff-white supercilium and a dark gray-brown band from the lores through the ear coverts. Their crown and upperparts are gray-brown. Their wings are gray-brown with a wide black-edged rufous band at the base of the flight feathers. (The band is the largest and brightest of all the cinclodes'.) Their tail is dark gray except the outer pair of feathers, which are blackish with pale rufous tips. Their throat and breast are white with dark scallops, their flanks light brown, and their belly and undertail coverts pale buff-white. Their iris is brown, their bill black with a yellow base on the mandible, and their legs and feet black.

分类信息

The Cordoba cinclodes was treated by several mid- to later twentieth century authors as a subspecies of what was then the bar-winged cinclodes (C. fuscus sensu lato) before it was split into several species. Data available since 2000 have confirmed that it is a species in its own right and not closely related to any of the bar-winged cinclodes' "daughters".<p>The Cordoba cinclodes is monotypic.

分布与栖息地

The Cordoba cinclodes is found in the Comechingónes Mountains of north-central Argentina from Córdoba Province north to Tucumán and Santiago del Estero provinces. It inhabits open grassy areas that are often rocky, and it associates with water less than other cinclodes. In elevation it mostly ranges between 1,600 and 2,800 m (5,200 and 9,200 ft) but has been observed as high as 3,300 m (10,800 ft) near Aconcagua.

Striped Prinia

Striped Prinia

Prinia striata

A rather dull-plumaged songbird of fields, grasslands, forest edges, and farmland, mostly at moderate and high elevations. Often sparsely distributed and difficult to find. Gray-brown above with a pale belly, pale eyebrow, and blackish streaking on head and wings. Typically found singly or in pairs, clambering about in grasses and shrubbery. Often sings from an exposed perch, giving a loud but dry, rolling series of notes, faster than the song of Himalayan Prinia. Visually very similar to Himalayan Prinia, but usually separated by range. In the area of overlap, female and non-breeding male Striped Prinias show stronger streaking on the back and a brighter rufous panel in the wings. Breeding males are distinguished by their paler faces with an obvious eye-stripe.

Banded Broadbill

Banded Broadbill

Eurylaimus javanicus

Deep purplish-red broadbill with bold yellow patches on the wings and tail. Broad-based bill and irises are bright blue. Female is slightly duller than the male, and lacks a black line across the chest. Favors riparian and wet forests from the lowlands up into montane areas, and will visit edges, gardens, and parks. Forages in the canopy, often flying from a perch to do so. More vocal than Black-and-yellow Broadbill, giving long, drawn-out whistles and buzzing trills.

Violet Cuckoo

Violet Cuckoo

Chrysococcyx xanthorhynchus

Small, sluggish cuckoo, more often heard than seen; listen for the male’s explosive descending trills and a loud but unremarkable “chom-wit!”, often given in flight. Adult male glossy purple with white-barred belly. Female greenish-brown above with curvier, paler barring extending up to the face; juvenile similar but with stronger rufous tones to the wings and orangish crown. Female and juvenile similar to female Asian Emerald Cuckoo or Little Bronze Cuckoo; look for combination of orange bill and patchy iridescent green instead of the Emerald’s unbroken sheen or Little Bronze’s dark bill and duller sheen.
