Banda Sea Monarch

Small, fast-flying parakeet of humid evergreen forest in foothills and highlands, especially in areas with seeding bamboo. Usually seen in pairs or small groups flying high overhead; rarely seen perched. Note pointed tail, fast and slightly bounding flight, and habitat (no other small parakeets occur in highlands of Mexico and northern Central America). Blackish barring on upperparts only apparent with a good view.

A thrush-sized bird with a heavy bill, olive-green upperparts, and a yellow underside. Particularly note the yellow cheeks and the yellowish patch beside the bill, making the dark eye stand out from the face. Pairs and small groups inhabit forests, edges, scrubland, and plantations. Confined to the island of Obi. Separated from female Black-chinned Whistler by unscaled throat, solid yellow underside,  and yellow facial sides. Vocalizations include an inflected high-pitched whistle, “tseeooeee.” Also gives a staccato, two-note “wit-cheer” with a longer second note, plus nasal “too-too” calls.

Large, handsome antbird with a bare red eye-ring. Males are black with chestnut wing patches and have white scales above. Females are chestnut with white wingbars. Inhabits the understory of humid forests, but has also been recorded in white sand forests. Only forages at army-ant swarms. The song is a series of nasal descending whistles. Both sexes of the Black-spotted Bare-Eye have brown-olive wings and backs covered with large black spots.
