Long-tailed Silky-flycatcher
Ptiliogonys caudatus
Striking bird unlikely to be confused with any other species. Very long tail and obvious crest stand out, in addition to soft blue-gray body with yellow-green head and flanks. Sometimes seen singly, but can also gather in flocks when fruiting trees (especially mistletoe) are abundant. Found in montane forest and edges.

Austral Blackbird
Curaeus curaeus
Distinctive but understated, this wholly glossy blackbird with a rather long, sharply pointed bill occurs in a wide range of mainly open habitats, from town parks and farmland with hedges and bushes to mattorral scrub and open forest. Feeds on the ground, at flowers, and in trees on fruit, often in small flocks. Voice is highly varied, sometimes loud, and can draw attention. Fairly common in central Chile, becoming uncommon farther south and in Argentina. Compare with cowbirds, which are smaller with shorter bills.

Gray Vireo
Vireo vicinior
One of North America's most nondescript birds: pale gray above, lighter whitish below, with a hint of pale spectacles and wingbars. Long-tailed for a vireo, but with a typically thick bill. Occurs on dry rocky slopes with patches of dense brush and trees, especially oaks and junipers. Usually seen singly or in pairs, often detected by voice. Most similar to drab Bell's Vireo but note habitat and size differences. Also compare with Plumbeous Vireo, which is shorter-tailed and more boldly marked.

Rufous-winged Tyrannulet
Mecocerculus calopterus
Small, warbler-like flycatcher found in the Andes and coastal hills. Mostly gray and white with whitish wingbars, white eyebrow, and rufous wing patches. Similar to Rufous-winged Antwren but lacks yellow on belly and has a gray crown. Actively forages at middle to upper levels of forest, and may join mixed-species flocks. Gives quiet but sharp notes, either alone or in a short series. Erratic in its occurrence and may seemingly be absent from some sites for months at a time; its movements have not been studied extensively.
