White-crowned Hornbill
Berenicornis comatus
Eccentric-looking hornbill with a bushy, upright white crest and a white tail. Male is white from the head down to the belly; female is predominantly black, with only a white crest. Pale wing edges revealed only when in flight. Unlike many other hornbills in its range, forages primarily at lower levels in the forest, frequently descending down to the ground. Social; forages in flocks. Gives rather soothing, owl-like hooting coos.

Berenicornis comatus is a large hornbill, reaching a length of 83–102 cm (33–40 in) and a weight of 1.3–1.5 kg (2.9–3.3 lb). Females are smaller than males. The plumage is black and white. The head, neck, breast and tail are white, while the remaining plumage is black. It has white crown feathers erected in a crest (hence the common name). Between the eye and the bill and on the throat there is bare dark blue skin. The bill is mainly black, with a yellowish base. Like most hornbills, it has a blackish casque on the top of its bill. The female has a black neck and underparts.

It is monotypic within the genus Berenicornis, although rarely the white-crested hornbill is also included in this genus, and the white-crowned hornbill is sometimes placed in genus Aceros instead.

This species is found in the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Borneo. This bird inhabits rainforests at low and medium altitudes, usually at an elevation below 900 meters. It may also be found on fruit, oil-palm and rubber plantations. It is threatened by habitat destruction.

The female lays two white eggs in a tree hole, then seals herself in by blocking the entrance to the nest with droppings, debris and mud. The male, and other adults and young forming a cooperative group, feed the breeding female and the chicks through a narrow hole. The female breaks the "wall" and leaves the nest when the chicks are able to fly.

Ramphastos toco
Large and impressive toucan with a huge orange bill with a black tip and base. The body is mostly black with a white throat, and rump, and a red vent. Dark eyes are surrounded by orange and blue skin. Found in savanna and open woodland, avoiding humid forests. Makes a raucous far carrying croaking “wreh” call, and flies with noisy wingbeats.

A very small sunbird with a short, slightly curved bill. Males are iridescent green above and pale gray below with a narrow red chest band. Females are much plainer, with a green back and pale gray-buff underparts. Found very locally in foothill and middle elevation forest, mostly in the canopy. Female similar to female Collared Sunbird, but shows much less yellow on the underparts. Separated from other sunbirds by shape and size. The vocalizations include a rising “tseep,” often repeated, and a low “tschk.”
Buff-breasted Tody-Tyrant

Unobtrusive, drab little brownish flycatcher. Olive-backed, pale below, with the head looking disproportionately large compared to the rest of the body. Note the buff lores and eye-ring. Inhabits remnant humid forest patches at higher elevations. Sings a sharp series of “kit-kit-kit-kiit-kiit-kiiit-kit” notes.
