Orange-crowned Oriole

Long-tailed, sparrow-like bird found in humid habitats along the Andes. Has a dark gray face and upperparts, with dusky yellowish underparts and a rusty red crown. Told apart from other brushfinches in range by its combination of yellow belly and red crown; more brightly colored than the similar Olive Finch, which has an olive-yellow back. Forages near the ground in montane forest and scrub within a wide elevational range. Listen for its simple whistled song and high, thin call notes.

Chunky medium-sized gamebird of far eastern Russia. Both sexes are dark brown with white-spotted underparts. Male is heftier and thicker-necked, with a black throat bordered by white. Also note bright red patch of skin above each eye. Female is patchy brown with a more peaked head. Inhabits well-shaded coniferous and mixed forests, where it forages on the ground and in trees. Male gives odd clicks and claps during display.

A tiny, stub-tailed gray songbird. Has an entirely gray upperside, a bright white throat, and whitish underparts with extensively gray-washed flanks and a white tuft of feathers on the shoulder. Male shows a diagnostic red breast patch. Juvenile resembles a drab female with a pale-based bill. Pairs and singles inhabit canopy of forest and edge in lowland and foothills. Confined to Buru, where it is unmistakable, being the only flowerpecker. Call is a very high-pitched “sit-sit-sit…”. Song is a series of six “see-see-see-see-see-see” notes.
