Sumatran Shortwing
Brachypteryx saturata
A small, dark songster of montane rainforest floor and undergrowth on Sumatra. Male is overall dark slaty-gray but slightly paler on the belly. Female is similar but duller and even paler on the belly. Both sexes have thin, white eyebrows and long, black legs. Forages on the ground but also hops on logs and low branches. Can be confiding but moves rapidly when alarmed. Superficially similar to Sumatran Blue Robin but shortwing’s tail is shorter and it lacks the white forehead. Song is a cheerful, random series of up-and-down whistles. Call, a sharp “click!”

Rufous-necked Snowfinch
Pyrgilauda ruficollis
Quite brightly-colored for a snowfinch. Pale sandy brown above and white below with an orange crescent on the back of the cheek. May be confused with Blanford’s Snowfinch, but look out for a pair of roughly equal-length black stripes on the face which form a right angle. Found on wide open steppe meadows, pastures, and near human settlements.

Yellow-spotted Bush Sparrow
Gymnoris pyrgita
A large, remarkably nondescript sparrow of dry country. Note the pale bill, the white eye-ring, the gray-brown back, the paler underparts, and the white throat. The small yellow throat spot is difficult to see. Found in dry thorn savanna, woodland, and lightly cultivated areas, often in small groups. Similar to Sahel Bush Sparrow, but lacks a distinctive eyebrow mark. Also similar to Pale Rockfinch, but has less patterning on the wing and a clearly defined white throat. The calls are cheerful chirps, often given in a quick series.

Scaly-throated Foliage-gleaner
Anabacerthia variegaticeps
Rather active, arboreal bird of humid evergreen forest in foothills and highlands. Forages at all levels clambering along branches and amid mossy tangles and epiphytes, at times hanging upside down like a chickadee. Often in pairs or small groups; frequently joins mixed-species feeding flocks. Note the behavior, grayish head with rich buffy spectacles, and pale buff throat (scaly markings often hard to see).
