Common Ringed Plover

Charadrius hiaticula

Stout shorebird with a stubby bill. Note orange legs, often bright on spring adults. Breeding plumage has bold black-and-white head and breast pattern; nonbreeding has subdued and browner pattern. Bill is bright orange with a dark tip when breeding, dark otherwise. In flight shows bold white wing stripe. Mellow whistled “poo-ee” call quite distinct from call of more slender and "spectacled" Little Ringed Plover. Breeds on sandy and stony substrates from beaches and lakeshores to moorland above treeline. Winters coastally, where often roosts with other small waders such as Dunlin.

识别特征

Adults are 17–19.5 cm (6.7–7.7 in) in length with a 35–41 cm (14–16 in) wingspan. They have a grey-brown back and wings, a white belly, and a white breast with one black neckband. They have a brown cap, a white forehead, a black mask around the eyes and a short orange and black bill. The legs are orange and only the outer two toes are slightly webbed, unlike the slightly smaller but otherwise very similar semipalmated plover, which has all three toes slightly webbed, and also a marginally narrower breast band; it was in former times included in the present species. Juvenile ringed plovers are duller than the adults in colour, with an often incomplete grey-brown breast band, a dark bill and dull yellowish-grey legs.<p>This species differs from the smaller little ringed plover in leg colour, the head pattern, and the lack of an obvious yellow eye-ring.

Yellow Canary

Yellow Canary

Crithagra flaviventris

A large canary with different-looking males and females. The male has bright yellow underparts, yellow-green upperparts, and a well-marked face pattern. The female is drab gray-brown with streaky underparts, yellowish edges of the wing feathers, and a yellow rump. Pairs and small groups occupy dry rangelands including coastal scrub, Karoo, and arid thornveld, where they are resident and nomadic, moving when food becomes scarce. The larger Brimstone Canary has a chunkier bill than Yellow Canary and prefers moist coastal thickets and woodland.

Sierra Madre Crow

Sierra Madre Crow

Corvus sierramadrensis

Uncommon small black crow. Plumage has an iridescent dark blue sheen when seen up close. Compared to much more common Philippine Large-billed Crow, note present species’ larger-headed appearance, small bare patch behind eye, and somewhat stouter-looking bill. Formerly treated as part of a more generic “Slender-billed Crow” that ranged from the Philippines to Sulawesi; Sierra Madre Crow is restricted to montane forests in northern and central Luzon. Often encountered singly, in pairs, or as small flocks in flight over swathes of contiguous forest. Calls are quite different from those of Philippine Large-billed Crow, being rather high-pitched short caws: “weh, weh, weh!”

Long-tailed Broadbill

Long-tailed Broadbill

Psarisomus dalhousiae

A gaudy, cartoonish-looking bird of tropical foothill and montane forests. Completely unmistakable; green with a black-and-yellow head and bright blue tail. Moves through the middle and upper layers of the forest in small to medium-sized flocks. Even if seen poorly, square-headed profile and long tail are distinctive. Song is a series of slightly wheezy descending whistles.
