Madagascar Swamp Warbler
Acrocephalus newtoni
Medium-sized, long-tailed, gray-brown bird. Note heavy diffuse streaking below and pale eyebrow. Madagascar endemic that is found mainly in marshes, though it will also use mangrove, heath, and moist scrub. Generally skulks in thick undergrowth, though it will sit out in the open to sing. Musical, reeling song: “chup-cho-we-we-we”. Similar to brush-warblers, but has more distinct breast streaking and white eyebrow, and is generally found in marsh rather than dry scrub or forest.

Golden-headed Quetzal
Pharomachrus auriceps
Large trogon, shimmering emerald above with red belly. Male has noticeable golden sheen on head and yellow bill; female has brown head and duller brownish chest and bill. In all plumages, look for entirely dark tail and dark eye to help separate from similar Crested Quetzal. Found in forests and edges in the subtropical zones. Tends to perch stolidly in the subcanopy; can be difficult to spot. Most often seen in the vicinity of a fruiting tree, singly or in pairs, although sometimes several birds can gather at a food source. Listen for mournful song, a repeated “go home, go home, go home.”

Banded Honeyeater
Cissomela pectoralis
Small black-and-white honeyeater found in drier woodlands of northern tropical Australia. Black above, white below, with neat white cheeks and black breast band. Nonbreeding adult has brownish back. Immature has yellow cheeks and brown upperparts. Juvenile similar but even paler brown and has very indistinct breast band.

Long-tailed Ground Dove
Uropelia campestris
Unmistakable ground dove. Brownish above and whitish below. Note the black spotting on the wings and the yellow eye-ring and legs. In flight the tail is V-shaped, with black sides and white tips. Found in grasslands and at the woodland edge, where it feeds on the ground. The song is a series of high-pitched “wha-ooop...wha-ooop...wha-ooop...” notes.
