Carmelite Sunbird
Chalcomitra fuliginosa
A large, dark sunbird that is usually found near the coast, although inland populations exist locally, perhaps most notably in Angola. Occurs in a variety of disturbed and edge habitats as well as in swamps and coastal woods. Males are overall chocolate-brown with iridescent purple-pink throats and foreheads, while females are a much paler olive-brown with noticeably darker throats. Bill is relatively straight. Distinguished from the smaller and more compact Green-throated Sunbird by its larger size, its small purple throat and crown, and the female’s dark throat. Calls include liquid “pip” notes and buzzy trills, with songs comprising variable combinations of these notes.

Guinea Turaco
Tauraco persa
A small green turaco with a red bill that inhabits lowland forests in West and Central Africa. More commonly found in disturbed forests than its yellow-billed relative, the Yellow-billed Turaco. Guinea Turaco has darker blue-purple wings and tail than other species in its range. Advertising call, like that of many turacos, is a raucous series of up to 15 caws that grow louder through time.
Ruby-throated Bulbul

Eye-catching medium-sized bulbul, endemic to Java, Sumatra, and Bali, where it inhabits open wooded habitats. Combination of jet-black head, golden-yellow body, and blood-red throat make this species unmistakable. Small crest is often raised, giving the bird a comical triangular-headed appearance. Adults have bright red eyes, whereas juveniles have pale ones. Song is a rather quiet and mellow “wee-dih’deedee!” Unfortunately declining in many areas as a result of the cagebird trade, and is now fairly localized, despite its ability to live in scrubby and degraded areas.

Silvicultrix jelskii
Small flycatcher found in the Andes of Peru and southwestern Ecuador. Like other chat-tyrants, it has an obvious white eyebrow. Separated from similar species in range by the yellow forehead, rusty wingbars, and brown back. Typically stays low near the edge of scrubby forest, and it is usually quiet and easily overlooked. Occasionally gives soft squeaks and trills.
