Gray-chested Babbler
Kakamega poliothorax
Unusual thrush-like bird with bright reddish-brown upperparts and gray underparts. Found in the understory of montane forest, often in thick and moist areas. Sometimes follows ant swarms. Generally very shy and difficult to see. Usually detected by song, a pretty series of pinched whistles; also gives quick series of agitated “jray” calls. Similar to illadopsises, but distinguished by the brighter back coloration and completely gray underparts.

Andean Lapwing
Vanellus resplendens
Large, boldly patterned shorebird of high Andean bogs, wetlands, and lakeshores; also ranges into grassy pastures in the northern part of its range. Usually in pairs or loose flocks, feeding with typical stop-start action of plovers. Little or no range overlap with Southern Lapwing of lowlands and foothills. Note dove-gray head and breast (no crest) and pink bill and legs (duller on immature). In flight shows bold black-and-white pattern on wings and tail. Often noisy, especially when flushed.

Asian Emerald Dove
Chalcophaps indica
Brightly-colored dove of the forest floor with bright green wings, coral-red bill, and ash-gray forehead. Male has an extensive silver cap which the female lacks. Inhabits various forested habitats from lowlands up into montane areas. Often encountered when flushed from a well-shaded trail. Gives a series of solemn-sounding hiccuping coos: “ti-woo, ti-woo, ti-woo.”

Stub-tailed Spadebill
Platyrinchus cancrominus
Tiny ‘cute’ flycatcher found in fairly open but shady understory of tropical lowland forest, mainly in humid areas. Appearance is distinctive, with brownish upperparts, striking face pattern, and stubby tail. Can be quite common but easily overlooked. Usually draws attention by its bright, nasal chi-dik or chi-di-dik call, usually given just after a short flight, after which it sits still and is frustratingly difficult to see.
