Malayan Cuckooshrike
Coracina larutensis
A large gray cuckooshrike endemic to the hill and montane forests of peninsular Malaysia. Gray above with black primaries; also note strong, slightly hooked bill. Male has a darker face, while female generally has more apparent pale barring on the lower belly. Both sexes have a dark patch from the bill to slightly behind the eye, giving a masked impression. Call is a two-noted, rather nasal squeal-screech: “gii-yaak,” uttered in flight as well as from a perch. Formerly treated as a subspecies of “Large Cuckooshrike”, along with Oriental Cuckooshrike and Indian Cuckooshrike.

Spectacled Petrel
Procellaria conspicillata
Large, stocky, dark petrel. Look for the diagnostic pattern of white “spectacles” on the face. In flight, alternates slow wing beats with glides. Usually seen well offshore in relatively warm waters. Breeds only on Inaccessible Island. The closely-related White-chinned Petrel lacks the white face pattern.

Straight-billed Earthcreeper
Ochetorhynchus ruficaudus
Perky little bird of rocky slopes and valleys in Andes, often in areas with low bushes and scrubby trees. Nests in holes in banks. Found singly or in pairs and at times curious and confiding. Runs well on ground with long rusty tail strongly cocked up. Identified by rather long, overall straight bill, whitish bib, and rusty streaking on belly. Has a longer bill than the superficially similar, but smaller canasteros.

White-wedged Piculet
Picumnus albosquamatus
Tiny woodpecker occurring in dense savanna and dry forests. The back is olive-brown, spotted white in some regions, and the breast is white with dense black scales or spots depending on region. The crown is black with white spots; males have a red forehead, black in females. The song is high-pitched trill.
