Rufous-throated Tanager

Noisy and occasionally conspicuous inhabitant of marshy areas in and around forests. Gleaming red eye and legs. Gray below with a rufous upper-back, a gray neck and head, and a long green bill. Voice is a very loud fluted “kua-kua-kua.”

A small pale hawk restricted to Sulawesi and nearby islands. Adult has a pale gray head, a bright yellow mark between bill and eye, and conspicuous white tail spots. Chest is salmon pink and belly white. Immatures are bright rufous above with bold white spots on tail and cream-colored underparts with heavy streaking. Usually found singly in tall forest in lowlands and hills. Typically located perched in upperstory when calling. At all ages, note diagnostic white tail spots, unlike all other local hawks. Vocal, giving a unique, strident call: “ki-ki-ki-ke-ke-ko.” Also gives a soft “mow.”

Small and rather scarce flycatcher found inside tall, undisturbed cloud forest along the east slope of the Andes. Note olive back and wings, buffy head and breast, and pale gray belly. May show some faint underpart streaking in southern part of its range. Typically encountered alone, actively chasing insects in lower to middle levels of the forest. Gives sharp “weep” calls either in a leisurely series or in a faster burst.
