Southern Brown-throated Weaver
Ploceus xanthopterus
Fairly small and slim weaver with a slender bill. Breeding male is distinctive: bright yellow overall with a chestnut bib. Females, non-breeding males, and juveniles are much duller but show streaking on the back and (usually) a pale base to the dark bill. Found mainly in wetlands, though they will range into drier surrounding country. Almost always in flocks. Vocalizations are typical of weavers: “chek” notes and a sizzling, “radio static” song. Plumages other than breeding male can be hard to separate from other weavers, but they can be cautiously identified by the pale base of the bill, wetland habitat, and overall size and shape.

Bare-shanked Screech-Owl
Megascops clarkii
Large for a screech-owl. Warm rufous-brown overall, brightest on face, which does not have a distinct black border like most other screech-owls. Coarsely marked on belly. Found in montane forests, where the best way to find it is by voice. Listen for the short series of hoots.
Lesser Gray Shrike
Lanius minor
Prominent black forecrown and contrast between pinky breast and white throat distinctive. Bill thicker and more rounded than Great Gray Shrike. Found in open country with scattered bushes and trees with prominent perches, often seen perching on telephone wires. A warmth-loving summer migrant breeding in southern Europe and wintering in Africa. Feeds mostly on invertebrates.
Crossley's Vanga
Mystacornis crossleyi
Brown-backed, babbler-like vanga of the forest understory. Male has a black hood, and female a white throat. Endemic to Madagascar, in eastern rainforest at low and middle elevations. Shy and elusive bird that walks along the forest floor and through thick tangles. Song is a long, penetrating whistle given from a low perch. Coloration and habits make it distinctive.
