Red-headed Bunting

A large, olive-brown parrot endemic to New Zealand. Adults have a deep crimson belly and undertail with a red-orange underwing. South Island birds are brighter with a white crown. Juveniles have a yellow base to their lower bill. A forest-dwelling parrot that is more common on offshore islands, but flourishes in areas where mammalian predators are controlled; some visit city and rural gardens. Harsh, grating “kra-aa” call is often heard before the bird is seen. The species also whistles a series of tuneful notes while perched. Distinguishable from Kea by smaller size, olive-brown as opposed to olive-green plumage, and range.

Incredibly elusive bird of high-elevation rainforest, confined to a tiny range in northern New South Wales and southern Queensland, where it skulks under ground cover in leaf litter. Nondescript plumage, mostly brown above, rufous below, with fine black barring extending from upperparts to long, rough tail. Adult male has black throat and breast with white mark from bill to upper breast. More likely to be heard than seen. Male has incredibly loud, diverse song repertoire.

Large hornbill with broad dark grooves on the upper mandible. Male has rufous head, neck, and underparts; female is all black. Both sexes have a sky-blue patch of facial skin, a red throat pouch, and a black-and-white tail. Inhabits dense hill forest with tall mature trees. Forages for fruits in the forest canopy, usually in pairs or small groups. Gives loud, echoing croaks, roars, and grunts.
