Una specie di colore spento e poco appariscente tipicamente trovata dal livello medio alla canopia nei boschi, dove si nutre principalmente di frutti. Questa specie può essere distinta dal Tordo beffeggiatore occhibianchi, di forma e colore simili, per il suo becco corto e scuro e le parti inferiori barrate, non striate. Il canto è una serie deliberata di strilli acuti e fischi a tono più basso. Il richiamo più comune è un fischio acuto e sottile.
Identificazione
The scaly-breasted thrasher is approximately 23 cm (9.1 in) long and weighs 53 to 98 g (1.9 to 3.5 oz) with an average weight of 67 g (2.4 oz). With its rather short and slightly decurved bill, this thrasher resembles a thrush. Adults of the nominate subspecies have a dark gray-brown head and upperparts with a reddish tinge on the rump. Their tail is a darker brownish black and its outer feathers have white tips. The folded wing shows a single white bar. Their chin and throat are whitish with brown streaks. The underparts are whitish and the chest and flanks have bold gray-brown markings that give the eponymous scaly appearance.<p>The other subspecies differ mostly in size and the intensity of their upperparts' color. A. f. hypenema is the largest and is paler than the nominate. A. f. schwartzi is mid-sized and has more white on its tail. A. f. vincenti is the smallest and is darker overall than the nominate. A. f. atlantica compared to the nominate is more reddish brown above and has less white in the tail.

The scaly-breasted thrasher was originally placed in genus Margarops with the pearly-eyed thrasher (M. fuscatus) but is now in the monotypic genus Allenia. It has five subspecies:

Comportamento
The scaly-breasted thrasher forages in trees; on different islands it hunts at different levels from low down to high in the canopy. It is omnivorous; its diet includes arthropods, fruits, and berries. It appears to eat a larger percentage of vegetable foods than other thrashers.<p>The scaly-breasted thrasher breeds in May and June. It builds a cup nest in a bush or tree. The clutch size is two or three.<p>The scaly-breasted thrasher's song is a "[s]eries of varied notes and phrases" similar to that of Mimus mockingbirds but softer and slower.

Tordo montano molto scuro. Delle dimensioni di un pettirosso, interamente nero con occhio bianco e anello oculare, becco e zampe gialli. La femmina è più marrone del maschio. Nessuna specie simile nel suo areale limitato. Si trova singolarmente o in coppia ad alte quote, di solito sopra i 2200 m. Di solito in aree aperte, a volte saltellando vistosamente sul terreno ma anche ai margini della foresta.

Bulbul marrone di medie dimensioni con una cresta marrone gonfia e un petto striato di marrone e bianco. Da notare anche la gola bianca, gli occhi arancione pallido e fissi, e un pannello alare olivastro-marrone opaco. Endemico delle aree pedemontane e di bassa montagna di Sumatra occidentale, dove abita foreste e margini forestali. Spesso foraggia in coppie o piccoli gruppi, tipicamente nei livelli medi e superiori della foresta. Come altri bulbul, si raduna spesso presso alberi e arbusti da frutto. In qualche modo simile nell'aspetto ai Bulbul della Sonda e dal collo macchiato, ma si noti la combinazione di becco corto e scuro, cresta prominente, faccia marrone scuro e assenza di toni olivastri sul dorso. Il canto è una strana serie di frasi stridule e tintinnanti, simili a quelle di uno storno. I richiami includono cinguettii confusi e silenziosi e strilli e raschi più insistenti.

Bulbul distintivo endemico del delta del fiume Irrawaddy nel Myanmar meridionale. Si notino le iridi bianche eponime, così come le strisce facciali gialle. Il corpo grigio-marrone contrasta con le ali oliva e il sottocoda giallo brillante. Abita le foreste di pianura sempreverdi a foglie larghe e le foreste paludose nel suo areale ristretto. In precedenza era trattato come la stessa specie del Bulbul dalla faccia striata (sotto "Bulbul dalla gola striata"), con cui si sovrappone nell'estremo sud-est del Myanmar; si notino gli occhi chiari e il corpo più scuro della specie attuale. Il canto è gutturale e melodioso.
