Alectoris melanocephala
Bella pernice dell'Arabia meridionale. Grigio pallido nel complesso, con una macchia color cuoio sul collo, strisce nere e bianche lungo i fianchi e un complicato disegno facciale bianco e nero. In volo, mostra punte alari scure e lati neri della coda. Trovata su pendii rocciosi con quantità significative di vegetazione. Solitamente in piccoli gruppi. La vocalizzazione più comune è una serie di richiami “chok” che diventano più rapidi e enfatici man mano che progrediscono. Simile alla Pernice di Philby, ma distinta dalla gola bianca, dalla corona nera e, in volo, dalla mancanza di castano nella coda.
Identificazione
Larger than other members of its genus, Alectoris, the Arabian partridge reaches a length of about 41 cm (16 in). The sexes are similar in appearance but males are a little larger than females weighing on average 724 grams (25.5 oz) against the female's 522 grams (18.4 oz). The crown and nape are black and there is a broad white band above the eye, separated from the white chin and upper throat by a narrow black line. This starts at the corner of the beak, passes below the eye and forms a "V" shape on the neck. The sides of the neck are pale brown and the body, wings and tail are bluish-grey with much dark barring on the flanks. The legs and beak are pink. Males have a knob on the tarsus (lower leg).

Areale e habitat
The Arabian partridge is native to southern Saudi Arabia, Yemen and western Oman. It has been introduced to United Arab Emirates. The subspecies A. m. guichardi occurs in eastern Hadramut and eastern Yemen and A. m. melanocephala occurs in the rest of the range. It is found on grassy slopes and stony ground with a reasonable amount of vegetation cover, from near sea level to an altitude of about 1,400 metres (4,600 ft). In 2022, a population of the birds was found in Harrat Uwayrid Biosphere Reserve in Saudi Arabia, around 100 kilometres (62 mi) further north than all other known populations.

Comportamento
A ground-dwelling bird, it feeds on seeds, other plant material such as Mediterranean grass and cudweed, and small invertebrates. The breeding season starts in March and a clutch of five to eight eggs is laid in a shallow scoop on the ground. The eggs are pale buff flecked with brown and are incubated for about 25 days before hatching into precocial young that are soon able to leave the nest.
Conservazione
The Arabian partridge has a wide range and is common in many parts of this. The total size of the population is unknown but the population trend appears to be steady. For these reasons, the International Union for Conservation of Nature has assessed the bird's conservation status as being of "least concern".

Un piccolo abitante del terreno adorabilmente rotondo e senza coda; la combinazione di un anello oculare bianco brillante, testa marrone cannella intenso e gola gialla è unica e inconfondibile. Si riproduce in foreste montane e collinari, dove preferisce aree umide o bagnate densamente vegetate, spesso in prossimità di ruscelli e gole. Sverna in foreste arbustive e vegetazione di margine forestale nelle basse colline. Foraggia attivamente sul terreno in fitta copertura, raramente avventurandosi allo scoperto. Emette un forte e fluido “chee-leu-chee-wit”, oltre a vari richiami acuti e striduli.

Un uccello giardiniere comune della foresta montana sulla Testa e Collo d'Uccello della Nuova Guinea. Robusto con piumaggio marrone smorto. A differenza di altre specie affini, il maschio manca di cresta e assomiglia alla femmina. Più facilmente osservabile presso il suo "giardino"; una spettacolare costruzione a forma di tenda che adorna frontalmente con oggetti colorati. Nessun altro uccello giardiniere di colore smorto coesiste, e la femmina dell'Uccello giardiniere mascherato ha un ventre giallo anziché marrone e si trova a quote inferiori. Voce: vari ronzii forti, strilli e gracchiamenti.

Uccello terrestre fortemente disegnato dell'Australia meridionale orientale, del Victoria nord-occidentale e del Nuovo Galles del Sud occidentale. Sopracciglio e baffi bianchi, con un dorso marrone castano intenso e un'ala intricatamente disegnata. La femmina ha ventre bianco e petto grigio, il maschio ventre bianco, fianchi grigi e petto e gola neri. Notare i fianchi grigi anziché i fianchi marrone caldo delle Tordelle quaglia cannella e petto castano. Solitamente visto camminare in aree di bosco di mallee aperto e macchia. Richiamo un “seeeep” lungo, acuto e fischiato.
