Résident endémique du sous-bois des forêts de feuillus subtropicales ombragées de l'île principale d'Okinawa. Il cherche sa nourriture au sol et est souvent observé en lisière de forêt. Dessus roux-orange avec un ventre blanc-grisâtre. Le mâle a une face et une poitrine noires. Similaire au Rougegorge des Ryukyu migrateur mais le mâle n'a pas les taches noires sur les flancs et le front noir de cette espèce. La femelle n'a pas les taches noires sur la poitrine de la femelle Rougegorge des Ryukyu. Son chant est une mélodie sifflée montante et descendante. Son cri est un cliquetis sec, accompagné de mouvements rapides des ailes et de la queue.

Répartition et habitat

Endemic to the northern and central Ryukyu Islands of Japan, primarily Okinawa Island and some smaller surrounding islands (e.g., Kumejima, Tokashiki, Zamami). It inhabits dense undergrowth in evergreen broadleaf forests, often near streams or in damp areas, and can also be found in secondary growth and plantations.

Similaire à l'Astrild à calotte noire, mais l'Astrild à tête noire a une combinaison unique de croupion et de flancs rouges et un ventre sombre. L'Astrild à tête noire se trouve à des altitudes plus basses que l'Astrild de Kandt, visuellement similaire, là où leurs aires de répartition se chevauchent. Grand hibou brun avec de longues aigrettes. Endémique de Madagascar, où on le trouve localement dans tous les types de forêts, et parfois dans les broussailles et les plantations. Se perche généralement haut dans un arbre, souvent dans un pin introduit. Son cri est une série d'aboiements nasaux, similaires à ceux du Hibou des marais, mais moins rapides et emphatiques. Similaire en taille à l'Hibou des marais, mais possède des aigrettes proéminentes et une poitrine pâle avec de fines stries. Beaucoup plus grand que les Petits-ducs malgache et de Torotoroka.
